Not one I can help you with. I am sure you'll get some good advice from some of the other site members.

Hi

Found a thread on the internet about sv speedo cables have a read see if it helps?

hi guys

i have bought an sv650s w reg however when i was taking it home i realised that the speedo wasnt working. it is not clockig the mileage up either however the rev counter and the oil and petrol warning lights are working correctly.

any ideas as to what could be wrong? i have been advised that they dont use cables. where would i look first to solve this problem?

thanks in advance

Check that its plugged in both ends some people unplug them to stop the miles clocking up! if it is pull the speedo drive out and check that it still has teeth you could also try spinning it with your fingers with the ignition on (do not start the engine) see if you get a reading, its ether the driver or the clock that is knackered more likley the drive tho.

where is the speedo drive situated ?

when you say check that it is plugged in both ends does this mean electronically or would there be a speedo cable?
Im sure the SV's were electronic, its situated on the gear box there will sockets on there for a plastic plug they should all be plugged in (there will be more than one plug but only one is the speedo plug)
i have been told that the sensor is on the front wheel. does this mean that there should be a wire that comes out of it and up to the speedo because theres nothing there.
The SV speedo signal is from the front wheel - it's a small black spacer like lump on the wheel spindle, sandwiched between the left forkleg and wheel bearing. It has a black sleeved cable coming out of it that is clipped past the brake caliper, over the mudguard, and up the forks to the speedo.

Follow the wire up and check that it's plugged into the speedo or wiring loom, and that the connector terminals are corroded.

If all this checks out you'll need to check that you're getting a signal out of the front wheel.

I've not taken one of these apart so I'm not sure how the signal is generated - most likely magnetic reed switch or inductive magnetic. Optical is pretty unlikely as dirt would stop it working.

If it's a reed switch than it's pretty easy to test. Connect an ohmmeter on it's lowest setting to the sensor wires and slowly turn the wheel. If the reading flips from very low, to very high (or overload / error) and back then it's working OK. Otherwise no good.

If it's an inductive magnetic jobbie then that's harder to test.

Hope this helps theres loads of info just to a search on google

this is or should be a link to a manual, hope it is of some help, if its electric then pos causes would be conectors or brake in wires at the head , rotors inside are prone on these as stated on a sv forum i found , keep us posted if you still need help...... :)
