As a stop gap measure, I bought a 21 year old CBR600F H***a as a CAT C damaged, repairable from James at GBS. The trailer was put to good use by Strongy who helped me get it home (cheers mate!)

Since it's arrival here, I have managed to evaluate what's needed to make it roadworthy once more and list is gradually growing.

Some of you may not know but there is nothing I enjoy more than a good challenge and if it involves motorcycle dismantling (and hopefully rebuilding) then I love it.

So, this weekend I have mainly been out with the spanners removing dodgy parts (and there's a lot of them on this one) and trying to source useable spares.

First job was to remove the OSF foot peg hanger/rear brake master cylinder assembly to remove the remains of the broken footpeg in readiness for the new ones already ordered. Next job was to find out why the seat didn't lock and after much head scratching I'm no further forward. Somethings missing and I've no idea what!

I have, however, managed to source a couple of seat panel fairings off of eBay and a rear wheel. Parts are down Bristol way so not any great distance to travel - result! :) Hopefully I'll get a reply from the seller soon as I missed the end of the auction (that's becoming a habit) letting me know if she's going to relist the items or let me buy them off of her away from eBay. I hope it's the latter just so that I don't have to wait another week for the bits.

The headlights don't work as the previous (?) owner may have got carried away with the wire cutters.... I have found loads of chopped wires going no where in particular :-D The headlights work OK as a passing light but no headlights.... bit strange that one. More of this particular challenge later, I'm sure!

Today was a late start but after stripping the switchgear and removing the air filter assembly I used half a can of 3 in 1 oil trying to free up the throttle return mechanism. Took me ages to strip the air filter down... those crossheads always chew up when you need it least. My favourite bike dis-assembly weapon, the impact driver, was used to it's maximum this afternoon! Anyway, it's better but not yet perfect. O'm hoping that the oil will soak through everything and I'll end up with a throttle that snaps shut and doesn't have to be would shut.

So, I've not really progressed too far but you can see where I've been.... every crappy jap nut and screw I have encountered has been replaced with A2 stainless allen cap bolts dripping with Copperslip  I'm off to the local nut and bolt shop tomorrow to order a shedful more..... I'm sure I'm going to need them!

Good luck with the project. Hope to see you soon and perhaps the bike in a little while.

Ha ha! You have no idea John! No idea!!

Not much done today, work as always comes first. I did manage to establish contact with the eBay seller of the bits I want (rear wheel and seat side panels) but I have yet to hear back as to whether he will accept my derisory offer.

Other than that, I straightened the foot brake lever and blasted 21 years of crud off of it in the grit blaster at work. Ordered £30 worth (about 200 pieces) of 5 and 6mm A2 stainless bolts of various lengths and a couple of hundred washers to suit from Allcap on the Madleaze trading estate. I also organised the supply of 15 pieces of 7mm OD x 5mm ID x 11mm long stainless spacers for the airbox from my engineer mate. Not sure what they are going to cost me yet but the deed has been done and I await the bill!

Talking of the airbox, I found that someone had modified the inlets on this one..... it looks like the perpetrator has cut semi-circles of cardboard from a cornflake packet and sellotaped them across the inlet ducts..... one can only assume that the motor was running lean when the after market exhaust was fitted so instead of jetting the carbs properly (probably couldn't remove the airbox!)  they have attempted to limit the airflow into the carbs, effectively making it run richer. My gob has been well and truly smacked ny this one!

James has been in contact to let me know that the new riders footpegs have arrived at chez GBS! Nice work fella! I'll pop in after work one evening this week to collect.

Digger has a couple of photo's of the bike somewhere so I expect the rip to be taken as soon as they are posted.

More news as my headache grows!

Oh! I got the headlights working too! It's amazing what a good whack with a hand will do!

John, I intended going to have a mooch around the spares at GBS anyway.... I might be looking for a different seat / rear end combo. I'll see you before the end of the week anyway.

Nothing has moved today. :( However, I collected two handfuls of bolts and washers and was relieved of £32.52p worth of beer tokens! Ouch!

The fix on the headlights wasn't as complete as I thought. The whack only made the dip come on - no main beam.

The eBay seller accepted my derisory offer of £20 for the back wheel and tyre plus the two seat side panels. Yay! result! 8-) 8-) 8-)

True enough... I spent two days cussing and swearing. What made it worse that I completely forgot about the Kemble Air Show!

Anyway, it tool me about 6 hours to remove the rear wheel, remove the rear brake caliper, strip it and reassemble it! The rear wheel spindle was seized into the bearings so I spent hours attacking it with a drift and a big hammer. Having eventually got it loose I then had a problem removing the rear brake caliper as one of the pistons (it's a twin pot device) had almost completely seized on.

After about four hours, the wheel was out of the frame and free of the caliper. I thought then that it couldn't get any worse, but it did! There's two pins which retain the pads in the calipers and an animal had managed to peen the ends over by hitting them the last time new pads were fitted. Grrrr... a lot of filing swearing (it helps!) and tapping and I managed to get them out.

Using a G clamp, I pressed the pots back into the caliper housing to break any possible corrosion. Having done that, I reassembled and bled the system. It then appeared to have one pot working properly and the other was sluggish, not coming "on" at the same rate.

This morning, I completely dismantled the rear caliper and it looks like the front O rings have failed allowing moisture to get into assembly and corrode the front of the pots.So.... I think I'm going to take the assemble down to Bransons and say "fix that". I could do it myself but it needs to go through a high frequency vibratory cleaning machine to ensure there's no muck in the galleries and I don't have one.

Next job was to refit the cush drive and rear sprocket into the "new" rear wheel. Thankfully that went OK. I then checked to ensure the "new" side panels fitted OK, they did! yay! result!

The rest of this afternoon was spent replacing jap screws and aftermarket bolts with decent Allen cap screws.

All in all a very long but strangely satisfying weekend. I ache all over now though! Arrgghhh!

Oh, I fitted the new footpeg and sourced someone for the bushes today too. £25 for a dozen little bushes though :( There goes the budget build idea!
